Kashmir
Govt. Polytechnic came into existence in the year 1958
and was temporarily functioning in the barracks of Naseem
bagh Kashmir university campus Initially training in three
displines viz. Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
was imparted. In the year 1962 the institute was shifted
to Gogjibagh. The institute was temporarily closed in
the year 1969-70 due to some reasons and was later revived
in the year 1972.The displine of automobile engineering
was added on the revival of the institute. The institution
was later upgraded to the pi diploma level in the year
1986, when besides adding three diploma in electronics
and communication two post diploma courses viz, post diploma
in Rural Technology and Management & Post Diploma
In Computer Science were also introduced. The institute
is spread over an area of more than 6 acres of land.
The institute
has got well-equipped workshops, laboratory, library and
classroom facilities and is housed in 15 building blocks
including an auditorium, and students hostel. In addition
to this a number of other buildings are under construction
with the Assistance from World Bank Technical Education
Project III. The Polytechnic is situated at Gogji Bagh,
which is 1.5 Kms. from Lal Chowk - the main city center
of Srinagar, which is the summer capital of the Jammu
& Kashmir State. The Institute can be accessed by
road, rail or on air. The nearest railhead is at Jammu
297 Kms. away from the Institute. However, Srinagar Airport
of international standard is just 13 Kms. away. The world
famous Dal Lakh is at a distance of 3 Kms. from the institute.
